Chapter 15 Test notes

Hello Students and Parents,

We have a test on Chapter 15 on Tuesday 3.16.10! Make sure you are studying! Here are the notes that we went over on Friday.

Russia:
World's largest country in land area with 6,659,328 square miles
World's largest lake: Caspian Sea
World's Deepest Lake: Lake Baikal @ 5,715ft deep (over a mile deep! Hold your breath!)
Capital of Russia is Moscow
Official Language: Russian
Population is 144,526,278 people

Russia's Heartland is split into 4 regions:
Moscow Region, St. Petersburg Region, Volga Region, and Urals Region

Moscow Region:
Moscow is the capital and largest city.
More than 9 million people live there.
It is the country's center for transportation and communication.

St. Petersburg Region:
St. Petersburg is Russia's 2nd largest city.
St. Petersburg was formerly the capital of Russia and the home to the czars for more than 200 years.
St. Petersburg was known as Leningrad during the communist era.

Volga Region:
The Volga River in this region is more like a chain of lakes.
They have hydroelectric power plants in this region.
During World War II many factories were moved to this region.
Volga river is the longest river in Europe.

Urals Region:
Mining is important in this region.
During World War II many factories were moved to this region.
Nearly every important mineral except oil has been discovered there.

Lake Baikal: 5,715 ft deep (more than a mile deep)
Lake Baikal is known as "The Jewel of Siberia"
Lake Baikal holds as much water as all of the Great Lakes combined.
Lake Baikal has many unique animal species such as fresh water seals.
Lake Baikal contains about 1/5 of all the world's freshwater.

Chernobyl:
The nuclear accident happened on April 26th 1986.
It is known as the world's worst nuclear accident.
The nuclear meltdown only took 2 minutes to happen.
Scientists estimate that over the next 30 years 280,000 Europeans will die from cancer as a result of Chernobyl.

Siberia:
Siberia contains the Ural mountains.
Siberia consists of more than 5 million square miles.
Siberia means "Sleeping Land" in the Tatar language.
Novosibirsk is the largest city in the Region of Siberia.
